My Final Post

Posted by admin on Sunday, January 17, 2010

This has been a very productive semester for Rho Chapter! A link to the Fall 2009 Rho Brothers Rho newsletter is available below for updates on everything that has happened in our Chapter. I'd also like to congratulate our 15 brothers-to-be who have begun the pledgeship process following Rush Week, which began Wednesday, January 6th and, of course, culminated on Bid Day on Sunday, January 10th.

In addition, I'd like to congratulate Brian Gross for stepping up as the new Chapter Editor of Rho! We've begun changing the position over, so in the future, updates to the site, newsletters, and updates for The Magazine of Sigma Chi will be provided by Brian.

Thanks for a great 3 terms as Chapter Editor!

New School Year

Posted by admin on Wednesday, September 16, 2009

Welcome back everyone! I didn't get the chance to write any summer updates, but much has happened over the break. All of the bathrooms in the house have been renovated and the house is looking great. However, the best news is that Rho Chapter was awarded the J. Dwight Peterson Award for the 2008-2009 academic year, announced at this year’s Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW) held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Brother Burke, who contributed significantly in making this happen, was in attendence at the workshop and has this to say to our alumni brothers:

"Dear Alumni Brothers,

It is a great pleasure to inform you that this past July, Rho Chapter was awarded the J. Dwight Peterson Award for the 2008-2009 academic year. Rho’s reception of the award was announced at this year’s Balfour Leadership Training Workshop (BLTW) held in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

The Peterson Award was commissioned by past Grand Consul J. Dwight Peterson in order to recognize overall excellence within undergraduate chapters. Award applications are meticulously graded and are designed to collect detailed information regarding all aspects of a chapter’s operations including: Ritual, Recruitment, Scholarship, Philanthropy, Risk Management, and Alumni relations.

This year, Sigma Chi Headquarters awarded fifty-three Peterson Awards to undergraduate chapters. This is a relatively small number when one considers the 230+ undergraduate chapters that compose the International Fraternity. Needless to say, to be awarded the Peterson Award is both a prestigious and elusive honor.

Rho Chapter is particularly pleased with this year’s award. In the past two years, the chapter fell short of the necessary qualifications needed in order to win the Peterson. However, due to a well-structured and well-implemented strategic plan for the 2008-2009 year, Rho Chapter was able to exponentially increase its scholastic, philanthropic, judicial, and campus accomplishments. As a result, our chapter can proudly boast that we have received the Peterson Award for eight of the past ten years.

Our active brotherhood fully recognizes the promise and potential that lays within the coming academic year. As such, we are confident that with our high ambition, individual talents, and adherence to the virtues that bind us together, we will continue to bring home the Peterson Award, and thus bestow favor and distinction upon our Chapter and Fraternity as a whole.

In Hoc,

Stefan Burke
Sigma Chi Fraternity
Butler University 2011"

Other exciting news is that this year's Derby Days is already upon Rho Chapter. The philanthropy event will take place from Sunday, September 20th to Saturday, September 26th. Our chapter will be focusing on collecting as many donations as possible for the Jon Huntsman Cancer Foundation to fund research. If you would like to donate to support our Fraternity's cause, please contact philanthropy chair, Neal Hennessy (nhenness@butler.edu).

End of the Year

Posted by admin on Wednesday, April 29, 2009

Our campus is already into finals week, but much has happened over the second half of this semester. The initiation of our 16 brother-to-be went great, thanks to all the efforts of undergraduate and alumni brothers! We also held Rho Chapter's annual Light up the Night at sundown on April 22nd with the women of Delta Gamma. This annual candle lighting takes place as a memorial in honor of Rho Sigma Chi Rich Gibson, who died after being hit by a drunk driver in the late 80s, which reminds everyone of the consequences of drinking and driving. Our chapter house has underwent improvements this semester. The dining room has been renovated to meet the new furniture, and a basement room has been renovated to be the new Howard Caldwell Memorial Study Room. These improvements are all thanks our House Corp!

On behalf of our chapter, I'd like to wish our brothers who are graduating the best of luck in their future pursuits and to wish everyone a nice summer! I will be making periodic updates over the summer to share the experiences of our brothers who are going to Sigma Chi events, and the site will be seeing other content improvements as well. If you haven't already, please sign up for our mailing list on the left-hand side of the page!

Indiana State Day

Posted by admin on Tuesday, February 17, 2009

Our chapter attended the annual Sigma Chi Indiana State Day on Saturday, February 7th. The events started out with a basketball tournament, followed by a province workshop and a banquet later that night. The province workshop provided useful information and tips for undergraduate brothers and brothers-to-be and everyone got something out of the experience. The banquet was also extremely well done. At the end of the dinner, awards were given to distinguish undergraduate chapters that performed well at certain goals. I am pleased to say that our chapter was awarded the James F. Bash trophy for highest participation in State Day, with nearly one hundred percent attendance, as well as the Indiana State Day Basketball trophy for the tournament in the morning. I also speak for my chapter when I say that we congratulate all our brothers who were awarded honors during the banquet.

Successful Rush!

Posted by admin on Saturday, January 24, 2009

As of January 11th, Rho Chapter has 16 new brothers-to-be! They have already begun the pledgeship process, and our entire chapter is behind them completely for every step of the way. During rush week, our chapter also took the time to install new floor molding in the hallways, to lacquer our kitchen tables, and to do yard work to improve the appearance of our house. Second semester is already upon us, so now we are focusing on getting a good start in classes!

MLK Christmas Dinner

Posted by admin on Monday, December 15, 2008

As finals are upon us and the holiday season approaches, our chapter has been staying focused on performing community service. In fact, Brother Wells has taken it upon himself to plan a Christmas Dinner at the Martin Luther King Center on Thursday, December 18th. Brother Wells has also been working hard gathering donations for this dinner, which will all be going to benefit those less fortunate. Therefore, we all ask that if you would like to make a donation towards this dinner that you contact me at tsansone@butler.edu or Matt Wells at mbwells@butler.edu. Thank you and happy holidays!
